The Story: Meet Quaylar Peter and Lucas Scott — two college roommates who are just about to have their lives turned upsidedown. A fridge that Lucas purchased at a government auction contains a device that has strange and magical powers. Now Quaylar and Lucas are about to embark on the greatest adventure of their lives: becoming superheroes. But what will happen when they encounter a seemingly unstoppable enemy in the form of Dr. Wung-Fu Battle?
Production Notes: In late May 2004 Jared Marshall came up with an idea: a guy presses a button inside his fridge and becomes a superhero. What followed was a 5 minute short film that we entered into an online film festival. After winning 1st place at that festival, we started to contemplate what our project for Summer 2004 would be. As usual, we had nothing. Meanwhile a friend of mine, Chad Peter, decided to start up NP2k TV, a website for online TV shows, and create his own web series called “The Void.” This got me thinking…our 5 minute short ended with Quaylar pressing the button, jumping off his roof and hitting the ground; proving that, indeed, he did not have superpowers. But what if he did? What if Quaylar and his friend Lucas became SUPERHEROES…and what if we made this into a web series?
A few weeks later Andrew returned from the east coast. I presented the concept to him and we got to work on it immediately. We decided the series would consist of five episodes, despite the fact that we were extremely unsure if we could actually shoot everything in time. Andrew was working and Jared was looking for work, this would limit our shooting days. Nonetheless, we began photography in July with Andrew slated to play Dr. Fight, a crazy Australian biophysicist–our bad guy. In mid-July Jared got a job in the Bay Area. Production was stopped. We had already shot 3/4ths of Episode 1 and now it looked like the series was dead. We did not have enough actors to fill the roles, especially a role as important as Quaylar, the lead. We didn’t want to, but we were nearly forced to call it quits. Most of our crew had stayed at their respective colleges for the summer, not many were in town to help us out. After many phone calls and many nights at Denny’s discussing the future of the series… we moved Andrew to the Quaylar role and brought in Mike Fu to play (the renamed) Dr. Battle, and Tommy Brand to act as Captain Canada/Stunt Coordinator.
However it was now mid-to-late July and we had to start Episode I all over again. Serious questions were posed, such as: would we be able to shoot five episodes before Andrew left on Aug 28th, considering the complexities that were involved? We had never done a big action movie with lots of stunts, lots of locations, and lots of story…all with ME in FRONT of the camera. Could we pull it off in time, could we pull it off…AT ALL? We decided to give it a shot. The premise was too funny to pass up. And the result was a 72 minute film, with nearly 3 hours of raw footage, 50 effects shots, and over 13 different locations. The “SUPERHEROES” series was viewed over 100,000 times during its run (and these were the days before YouTube), and inspired fan-made trailers, action figures, jack-o-lanterns, and one very angry internet radio show.
